IBAN Validator

Paste or type any IBAN. We check the format, verify the check digits, and identify the bank — instantly, in your browser.

Your IBAN never leaves your browser. All validation runs locally.

What Is an IBAN?

An International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is a standardized format for identifying bank accounts across borders. Introduced by the ISO 13616 standard, it is used in over 80 countries — and is mandatory for all payments within the EU and the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).

How IBAN Validation Works

Every IBAN includes a two-digit check number (positions 3–4) calculated using the MOD-97 algorithm. This mathematical verification catches over 99% of typos and transcription errors. Our validator performs this check instantly in your browser — your IBAN data never touches any server.

IBAN Formats by Country

IBAN length and structure vary by country. The table below shows the format for all EU and SEPA countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my IBAN data safe?
Yes. All validation happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your IBAN is never sent to any server. You can verify this by disconnecting from the internet — the tool will still work.
Which countries are supported?
We support all 27 EU member states plus Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, Vatican City, Gibraltar, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland — every country in the SEPA zone and beyond.
Can this tool verify that the account exists?
No. IBAN validation checks the format and mathematical integrity of the number. It cannot confirm whether the account is active, belongs to a specific person, or holds funds. Only the issuing bank can verify account existence.
What does 'check digits failed' mean?
The two digits after the country code (positions 3–4) are calculated from the rest of the IBAN using the MOD-97 algorithm. If they don't match, the IBAN almost certainly contains a typo. Double-check each character carefully.
Why do IBAN lengths differ between countries?
Each country incorporates its domestic bank account number format (called BBAN) into the IBAN. Countries with longer account numbers naturally produce longer IBANs. Norway has the shortest (15 characters) and Malta the longest in the EU (31 characters).
Can I validate multiple IBANs at once?
This tool validates one IBAN at a time. If you regularly process large volumes of IBANs — from invoices, payment lists, or supplier data — Veluvanto can extract and validate them automatically as part of your document workflow.
